How to Talk to Strangers
- Don't go straight for the supermodel. Warm up with someone unintimidating first.
- Avoid talking about yourself, politics, sex, complaints or money. Keep it light.
- Be in a good mood. Eat a cookie, whatever works. Then it'll be easier to know what to say.
- Be agreeable. Even if it seems false, play along as an experiment.
- Don't be rude. It's not cool, it's insecure. That's why celebrities don't do it.
- You can always leave, but be polite about it.
The proud tradition of brawling at the pub is one I hope we don't soon abandon. While there were times when I bit off more than I could chew, I am grateful that cooler heads that prevailed. It doesn't have to be such a big deal. There can be a healthy sportsmanship to it when everyone understands that it's all in good fun and no one spoils it with a weapon (thereby inviting everyone else to gang up on them).
