Chinese History
In 1949, Communist leader Mao Zedong declared the mainland under the rule of the so-called People's "Republic" of China, causing the former government to retreat to the island of Taiwan, where it continues to claim to be the legitimate government of all of China. Despite the Communist party trying to appropriate the name and history of "China" for itself, the reality is that the nation is still divided.
