History
When I was in school in the ‘90s, I learned HTML because I was taught that the internet was going to be this great democraticizing force that would liberate us by allowing anybody to create their own website. But most people never learned even basic web design, so we soon became even more dependent on a few tyrannical companies. My hope is that we are emerging out of that mistake, but this is one of the reasons why I have always resisted letting others control my info or public image.
